DEAD BIRDS
(Rotterdam, 2006)

Two still lifes anonymously executed on two central locations in Rotterdam, consisting of several local and migratory birds species. The still lifes were realized in a period of great fear for avian flu in Europe, after previous discoveries of the virus in other countries. This fact formed reason for the immediate intervention of the several security agencies, blocking off the area with police tape. In one case, the birds were taken away, but the tape remained in place. This caused the “invisible danger” of the virus – which first had temporarily manifested itself in the form of the birds – to take on a new appearance.
